The Statistical Commission of the United Nations is considered the highest decision-making body for international statistical activities marking the origin of World Statistics Day. This commission proposed the idea to dedicate a day to statistics to spread awareness and contribute to global progress. Then 20th October was designated by United Nations Assembly as World Statistics Day.

The theme for the first World Statistics Day was “Celebrating the Many Achievements of Official Statistics”. And many events took place all over the world to mark this day. The events included conferences, seminars, competitions, statistical exhibitions, etc. Every year when this day is celebrated there is a new theme.
