Valentine’s Day History
Valentine’s Day is a day to praise love and celebrate romance, but if we go to find out the reasons for the occurrence of this festival we will be shocked. Its history is dark, bloody, and painful for true lovers. Earlier in ancient Rome, a festival called the Feast of Lupercalia was celebrated. Where men were drunk and naked and they use to hit young women with the belief that this would make women fertile. They did not stop here only, after this, they play a matchmaking lottery game where all the young men drew the names of women from a jar. Then they paired up for the duration of the festival and after the festival, they continue with each other only if the match was perfect otherwise men break the relationship and find a new one.
Saint Valentine was actually a priest of Rome who got executed for protesting against the crucial emperor Claudius II. The emperor Claudius believes that the men of Rome do not want to join his army due to their attachment to wives and family. With immediate action he abundant marriages and engagements in Rome so that the men could join his army and could die in his favour.
Saint Valentine, a priest, protested against this and helped new lovers marry secretly. When Claudius got to know about all this he ordered his army to arrest the priest Saint Valentine and to keep him in prison for some days and beat him with stones until he loses all his senses and finally cut off his head to execute him. This order was carried out by the executioners on the 14th of February which is celebrated as Valentine’s Day today. Valentine’s Day is actually the death anniversary of Saint Valentine. Later on, his death was honoured by the Catholic Church and a festival named St. Valentine’s Day occurred.
Under the rule of the cruel emperor, Claudius the people of Rome had performed so many crimes. The feast of Lupercalia mentioned above was one of the examples of torture made by the inhuman Claudius, so as the days of Claudius passed away as an emperor, the Catholic Church banned the feast of Lupercalia and combined this festival with St. Valentine’s Day. None of the acts of torture against women was included or combined with the St. Valentine’s Day festival. Both men and women are democratic to choose their love partners with their own choice and finally today this day of 14th February is popularly known as Valentine’s Day.
Valentine Day Celebrations
People celebrate this day by sending romantic messages of love and affection to their partners, families, and friends. Couples spend particular time together to make their bond of love more strong. They also exchange gifts, flowers, and Valentine’s Day cards among themselves. Some boys and girls confess their love in front of their dream partners and ask for their commitment.
Celebrations of this festival vary from person to person according to their interests. Some people celebrate this day in honour to make their love life more beautiful with their dream partners while some do celebrate this festival only for their own fun and to play with people’s hearts still, some people celebrate this festival as the early Romans used to do by raping women and imposing physical relationships on them which lead to spoiling both the lives of men and women.
Conclusion
Valentine’s Day is a true sign of love and sacrifice. St. Valentine has sacrificed his life to maintain humanity and love among the people of their country. He had tried to teach us the true meaning of love as to live for others, he had spread love in all human hearts. Being a great legend he has always supported true lovers and led them to a happy married life. But nowadays half the population of the world has changed the meaning of love. They don’t make sacrifices for others they make others sacrifice everything for them. People call their selfish behaviour the name of love, which is inappropriate. True love is something that does not put you in a cage, it is something that sets you free to fly high in the sky of dreams.
