World Malaria Day

World Malaria Day is celebrated every year on April 25th. This day is celebrated to spread awareness about the global threat that is caused due to malaria. Continuous efforts are made to control this disease and steps are taken to eradicate this deadly disease. This day also acts as an important reminder to the world about the burden that this deadly disease causes to communities and focuses on the need for sustained efforts to eradicate it. Malaria is caused by humans because of bites infected mosquitoes. It can result in severe illness and sometimes death. Plasmodium parasites are responsible for this.

History of World Malaria Day

The history of World Malaria Day has its roots attached to 2007. This day was introduced by the World Health Organization (WHO). This body is responsible for decision-making in the healthcare segment. This day was celebrated first time on April 25, 2008. This day was chosen to celebrate Malaria Day because it marks the anniversary of a day in the year 2000 when the African leaders adopted the Abuja Declaration on Black Malaria. The major reason for establishing this day was to provide an annual platform for awareness, advocacy, and action. Every year various activities are done that result in positive outcomes in terms of increased funding for malaria control programs and reduction in deaths due to malaria.

There is a high need to celebrate this day. Some of the key reasons that make this day very important are:-

• All over the world, majorly in tropical and subtropical areas, malaria is a major public health problem faced by people. Every year number of deaths occur due to malaria. Children in pregnant women are the most vulnerable population that gets affected by this disease. 
• On this day we highlight this issue that draws the attention of government officials, individuals, organizations, etc., and encourage them to make continuous efforts to eradicate this disease. 
• This day also spreads awareness about various preventive measures that an individual should take to save himself/herself from this deadly disease. Important measures include anti-malaria medication usage, distribution of insecticide-treated bed nets, implementation vector control program, etc. 
• This day encourages people, and organizations all over the world to take proactive steps in seeking early treatment whenever necessary.
