Bachelor of Journalism course is an undergraduate degree for students interested in Journalism and wanting to make a career in Journalism and Mass Communication after the 12th standard. Journalism refers to the art of gathering information from various sources and creating something valuable and informative. Also to be a good journalist the most important quality and skill is to comment on multiple events diplomatically and not in a way that favors one party or influences the reader. The duration for completion of this course is three years. Every year, this course is pursued by 70 lakh candidates from all over India. 

This course contains holistic ideas from every Industry such as media, entertainment, etc. Both Journalism and Mass Communication are offered together in the course. There is immense career growth potential in the field of Mass communication. Once the Bachelor of Journalism course is over, then there are a lot of opportunities to work in TV channels, Newspapers, Magazines, etc. They can work in both print media and electronic media. Print media consists of Newspapers, magazines, news digests, etc. At the same time, Electronic media consists of TV, Radio, and Digital media.

Bachelor of Journalism Eligibility Criteria 

The primary skills that help a journalist to stand exceptionally well and stand out from the crowd are imagination, creativity, and originality. Therefore one needs to excel in these skills.

• Students who wish to do a Bachelor of Journalism need to complete their class 12th from a recognized board. Some colleges state that minimum eligibility criteria include 50% or more aggregate marks at the 10+2 level.
• Additionally, students are required to have studied Hindi or English at their school level.
• Students are free to join from any field be it Arts, Science or Commerce.

Entrance Exam for Bachelor of Journalism 

Based on merit, which is the performance of Class 12th level, or based on the entrance test conducted, candidates can secure admission to the BJ course. Generally, the top colleges prefer scores of entrances for access. The BJ course entrance exam is of three hours and aspirants are judged on knowledge of various broad subjects like General Knowledge, Current Affairs, English, Aptitude, etc. Various entrance tests are JMI Entrance, IIMC Entrance, ACJ Entrance, FTII JET, and SAT. In some colleges, the Entrance test is followed by a PI (personal interview).

Bachelor of Journalism Syllabus and Duration 

The syllabus of BJ includes areas of knowledge regarding Journalism, Reporting,  Economics, Political Science, Production, Indian Economy, Press Laws, Ethics, Creative Writing, Broadcast Journalism, History of the Press, Editing, Reporting, Parliamentary news, etc. All these topics will be taught in Three years, including 6 semesters.

Journalism is one of those evergreen career fields which has seen decent growth in past years with the introduction of TV, Internet, etc., and is expected to grow further. The average salary that one can expect after completing a BJ degree is approx—3,80,000 to 4,00,000 per annum.
