The Gods felt threatened by this and turned to Lord Vishnu for assistance. Lord Vishnu dressed as a lowly Brahmin and travelled to Kerala.

He wished for land that could be covered in three feet or less, and Mahabali granted his request. The Brahmin soon grew more prominent and his first and second steps covered the sky and the ground. The king gave his head as payment for the final step that would take him to Patala before he could take his third step. However, as a reward for his good deeds, the king was given permission to visit his subjects once a year. He makes a yearly trip to Earth on Onam.
