Entry Routes for How To Become a Civil Engineer

1). Diploma Program Route for How To Become a Civil Engineer

After completing your 10th standard, it is possible to become a civil engineer by seeking a diploma program. The duration of this diploma program is 3 years. After completing this diploma program you can directly get admission in b.tech second year. This is also known as the Lateral entry scheme.

There are Two Types of Diploma in Civil Engineering

  • Polytechnic Diploma in Civil Engineering.
  • ITI Diploma in Civil Engineering.

Polytechnic Diploma in Civil Engineering

The polytechnic diploma is a Technical Education of Engineering or Diploma in Engineering courses that are focused on practical and skill exposure of training. Polytechnic in civil engineering is a diploma course whose duration is 2-3 years.

There are Polytechnic Institutes run by the government to provide technical education of Engineering in various branches. For example Lucknow polytechnic college in Lucknow. it is mandatory to clear the entrance examination of the polytechnic. Without clearing the entrance examination, you can’t get admission to a polytechnic.

Entrance Examination: Polytechnic Common Entrance Test.

It is a state-level examination for the entrance in Diploma programs at Government, Aided, Private, Un-aided Polytechnics and Second Shift polytechnics run in existing Private unaided Engineering Colleges/ Institutes.

ITIs (Industrial Training Institutes) Diploma

In India, ITIs are offering some of the best vocational programs in diverse branches of engineering. Civil engineering is one of them.

There is no Entrance Exam for Admission in ITI Courses/Trades

Admission would be given only to eligible candidates as per the merit list which would be made on the basis of qualifying board examination marks.

Here we Providing a List of Government Polytechnic Colleges

  • Ch. Brahm Parkash Industrial Training Institute
  • DN Lal Sharda Industrial Training Institute
  • Agnel Industrial Training Institute
  • Bicholim Government Industrial Training Institute
  • A.I’s M.H. Saboo Siddik Industrial Training Institute
  • Aditya Industrial Training Institute
  • Gian Sagar Industrial Training Center
  • Government Industrial Training Institute – ITI Ajnala
  • A.B. Memorial Private Industrial Training Institute

Civil Draughtsmen and Women Trade/Course

Draughtsmen translate the ideas and rough sketches of engineers, architects, and scientists into detailed drawings. Its duration is 2 years long.

Difference Between the Polytechnic Diploma and ITI Diploma Courses

Basically, It is in the difference of pattern of education, ITI encourages more the workshop related to the practical knowledge, while the polytechnic emphasis more on the theoretical course.

After getting this diploma program, you can have placements in civil or construction companies  as Assistant Manager, Civil Engineer, Assistant, etc

2). Bachelor Degree Route

Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in civil engineering is an undergraduate Engineering degree whose duration is four years. 12th passed students from the science stream are eligible for this undergraduate course. Admission in Colleges is done mostly through an entrance exam but in some colleges, there is also a merit-based system.

This is further subdivided into two Routes :

  • Private College Route.
  • Government /Public College Route.

Private College Route

The average fees of B.Tech in civil engineering from private colleges – 3 Lacs – 6 Lacs. For taking Admission in private Engineering Colleges you don’t need to attend any Entrance Exam. The best private colleges that provide B. Tech in civil engineering are mentioned below

Here we are, Providing List, of Some Private Engineering College

  • SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai
  • Lovely Professional University, Phagwara
  • Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal
  • Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering, Bangalore
  • PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore
  • RV College of Engineering, Bangalore
  • Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore
  • Birla Institute of Technology and Science

Government College Route (B.Tech in Civil Engineering)

The average fees of B.Tech in civil engineering from public/ Government colleges – 2 Lacs – 5 Lacs ( without hostel ). For getting admission in government colleges or IIT’s, candidates must have to clear JEE Mains followed By JEE Advanced Examination.

After clearing the exam of JEE Mains and Advance, candidates get admission in respective IITs. Like IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT BHU, IIT Roorkee, etc.

Here we are providing the List of IIT’s Colleges

  • IIT Madras, Est 1959
  • IIT Delhi, Est 1963
  • IIT Bombay, Est 1958
  • IIT Kharagpur, Est 1951
  • IIT Kanpur, Est 1959
  • IIT Roorkee, Est 2001
  • IIT Guwahati, Est 1994
  • IIT Hyderabad, Est 2008
  • IIT (BHU) Varanasi, Est 2008
  • IIT Indore, Est 2009

List of some Entrance Examinations for Bachelor Degree (B.Tech) in Civil Engineering

1). JEE Mains

Eligibility: 10+2 with Science stream (PCM plus English are compulsory subjects). For admission into IITs, NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs candidates must have qualified 10+ with 75% (65% for reserved category candidates) marks.

2). JEE Advanced

JEE Mains is followed by the JEE Advance Entrance exam which is conducted by or under the control of the Indian Institutes of technologies.

  • Mostly in private colleges / Institutes Admission criteria are based on the merit system moreover the average fees for the course are very high.
  • And, in government colleges, you have to clear the entrance examination and the average fees are comparatively low

3). Master Degree Route

M.Tech (Master of Technology) in Civil Engineering: M.Tech in civil engineering is a postgraduate level program whose duration is 2 years.

Eligibility: Candidate must be passed B.Tech/B.E in civil engineering or equivalent examination from any of the recognized universities/colleges.

Entrance Examination for M.Tech in Civil Engineering :

GATE: The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an examination that primarily tests the understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering and science and technology.

Private Colleges offer M.Tech without Entrance Exams: Yes some of the private colleges are there that offer M.Tech in civil engineering without any entrance exam. But generally, their ranking is not so good and doesn’t provide good placements.

Private colleges provide admission without gate examination but it doesn’t make your degree valuable. You have to get the Gate Score to have good placements in civil engineering.

Let me mention again that the Average fees of Private Colleges are generally high in both B.Tech and M.Tech as compared to public or government college.

Placements in Civil Engineering

How To Become a Civil Engineer, The placements in civil engineering are very outstanding. If u come from IITs then you would get high job packages. But candidates passed from private colleges don’t get good placements at all. There are so many career opportunities available as placements in civil engineering.

You can Apply your resume in private construction or civil organizations and government and public sector units as well. Basically, in the public sector units and government organizations, you need to clear the entrance exam first.
