History of National Statistics Day

History of National Statistics Day takes us to the 20th century when the importance of statistics for planning and development began to come under-recognition. In 1931, Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) was established and it played a crucial role in planning for this Day. It was 29th June and the year was 2007 when the Government of India officially declared the observance of National Statistics Day. This day was the birth anniversary of renowned statistician, Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, who was also the founding father of ISI. This day was chosen to pay tribute to  Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis for his contribution to the field of statistical science and the various efforts that he had put in to revolutionize data analysis.
