Diwali Essay, Diwali is a festival that celebrates victory, joy, and harmony. The main motive of this festival is to light our houses and others’ houses too. Diwali is derived from the word ‘Deepavali’ where ‘deep’ refers to the mud lamps which we decorate in our houses on the day of Diwali and ‘avail’ refers to queue. The victory related to this festival is a benchmark of good over evil. This festival is celebrated to honour the return of Lord Rama after his exile of 14 years from the forest. He spared his days thereby fighting with many demons, King Ravana was the main and most powerful or evil demon of all of them.
He kidnaps Lord Rama’s wife Sita Mata only to take revenge for his sister’s insult. Lord Rama was exiled with his wife Sita Mata and brother Laxman who came with him just to look after and serve his brother and sister-in-law. This festival is celebrated only by the people of the Hindu community because it is related to the god of Hindus. People from the Hindu religion worship Lord Ganesha and Goddess Laxmi on the eve of Diwali. Worshipping these two gods is a must thing on Diwali by Hindus. People believe that day of Diwali is best for purchasing or starting something new for example people like to start investing their money on the day of Diwali.
People believe so because they think that by starting something new on this day they are taking the blessings of these two deities. As Lord Ganesha is always worshipped by Hindus whenever they start something new Ganesh puja is a must thing which they do and goddess Laxmi is well known for wealth and prosperity among the Hindu community people. Tasty and delicious sweets are made in homes on this day. Children and in some families elders also like to burn firecrackers with their families which results in air pollution the next day. This festival mainly falls either at the end of October month or at the start of November month.
Relation with History
Diwali Essay, The history of this festival is all around life or we can say the struggle of Lord Rama. He spared 14 years of his life in the forest with his wife and brother just to keep the value of his father’s promise which is given by his father to his stepmother. She was not so bad at all with him but when it came to becoming the king of Ayodhya one of her closest servants washed her mind and fixed the logic of jealousy in her mind and stated to her that if she would not encourage her husband to give the position of Ayodhya’s king to her own son than afterwards she has to suffer and the mother of Rama will treat her like a servant in future.
When the feeling of insecurity came to her mind she took two blank promises from his. In the first promise, she asked for the crown of a king for his own son Bharat and in order, for the next promise, she asked to exile lord Rama from home for 14 years. Lord Rama agreed to all the orders given by his father but when he was exiled from home his father died in shock at all this incident and injustice that happened to his most lovable son. There in the jungle, he fought with Ravana to release his wife from the imprisonment of evil Ravana.
When he got back to his wife it was already 14 years passed then they returned home. When they returned, every people in Ayodhya city lit up mud earthen lamps of ghee and the whole of Ayodhya city was decorated just to honour and celebrate the joy of his return. After this incident, every year people celebrate Diwali to commemorate the happiness and joy of his return. Diwali eve falls on ‘Amavasya’ tithi according to the Hindu calendar which signifies the end of the month.
How do People Celebrate?

People decorate their houses with candles, earthen mud lamps, colourful mercury lights, flowers, and other items of decorations. People visit their family or friends and exchange gift items. They wish each other ‘Happy Diwali’ or ‘Shubh Deepavali’ in the Hindi language. Worshipping of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Laxmi is done on the eve of Diwali after that prasad of Diwali puja is distributed among family members, friends, and neighbours.
Kids and other family members burn firecrackers to show their happiness and to enjoy this festival with the family and society. Nobody sleeps during Diwali night it is a ritual so they can celebrate this festival the whole night by burning firecrackers. All the lights of the house lit up the whole night and one big ghee lamp is also burned the whole night in front of the temple inside the house or at the place where they worshipped Lord Ganesha and Goddess Laxmi.
This festival signifies wealth, prosperity, and happiness. People treat this festival as a fortune day. Every Hindu celebrates this unique festival of lights and joy. It is the brightest festival of all the festivals celebrated in India. In Kolkata city, this festival is celebrated as Kali puja which is dedicated to the goddess Kali.
She signifies the strength and savage attitude of women which women mainly show in times of need. People get holidays from their offices and schools on the day of Diwali. People working in government and also in some private offices get Diwali bonuses or some extra cash for Diwali celebrations. Many people believe in investing their money or buying new things on the day of Diwali as this festival designates fortune, luck, and wealth.
